Boss Bottled Absolu vs Dior Homme Intense
Both are considered elegant and office-appropriate, but that describes them poorly. Boss Bottled Absolu opens with leather and incense and has patchouli and myrrh in the heart — resinous, dry, almost austere. Dior Homme Intense goes the opposite way: bergamot and lavender up top, then iris and cocoa, amber, cedar and vetiver underneath. Iris is the key here — it gives that powdery, cool quality people describe either as 'expensive' or as instantly irritating. With iris there's almost no middle ground. Interestingly, a 5 ml decant costs €15 for both.

Dior Homme Intense is more distinctive and riskier. Iris with cocoa is a combination you'll either love or never understand, which is exactly why a decant matters more here than with most fragrances. Boss Bottled Absolu is more universal, though not simple — leather and incense are serious notes, but they sit in the background rather than the foreground. For someone younger, or for anyone powdery scents feel foreign to, take Boss. For someone who wants a fragrance with instant recognisability and is at home with powdery notes, Dior. Since the decants cost the same, there's no reason not to try both.
What does it mean that Dior Homme Intense is 'powdery'?
It means iris. Iris is obtained from the rhizome of the iris plant and smells cool, dry and a little like face powder — in perfumery a sign of luxury, in everyday reading something some people describe as 'old-fashioned'. If you've never consciously smelled iris, this is the first fragrance where you'll recognise it.
Which is better for the warmer months?
Boss Bottled Absolu, with a caveat. Iris becomes heavier and stickier in the heat, so Dior Homme Intense isn't the best idea in summer. Boss, with leather and incense, is dry, which helps, but its Parfum concentration means sticking to one spray.
Which is the better first purchase?
Boss, because it's less of a risk. Dior Homme Intense is a fragrance you either love or don't, with no middle way — which is great if you know iris suits you, and expensive if it turns out it doesn't.
Which suits a younger generation better?
Boss Bottled Absolu — it's fresher and less powdery. Dior Homme Intense is more classic and mature.
Is Dior Homme Intense suitable for the warmer months?
It's not ideal — powdery iris becomes heavy in the heat. Boss Bottled Absolu is the better choice for the warmer months.
Which offers better value for money?
Boss Bottled Absolu — it offers excellent quality at a lower price. Dior is the premium name, but with a €30 difference Boss is the clear winner.
