Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade vs Les Sables Roses
Louis Vuitton has two ouds in our range, and these two are exactly the most common choice when someone is deciding on a first fragrance from this house. The price is the same, €375 for a hundred millilitres, and the decants cost the same too, so the scent alone decides. And the difference isn't small: Ombre Nomade is smoky and resinous, Les Sables Roses rosy and dry. Expecting them to be similar because both are ouds from the same house is a mistake.

Ombre Nomade opens with raspberry, its only bright moment — right after come incense, benzoin and saffron, with agarwood and birch underneath, which give it a smoky, almost tarry edge. Its main accords are oud, woody, smoky and leather, while rose only comes eighth. Les Sables Roses is arranged the opposite way: rose is the first accord, oud the second, and saffron keeps it away from perfumery softness. So Les Sables Roses is dry and desert-like, Ombre Nomade dense and smoky. According to community ratings it's also louder and longer-lasting — 10–16 hours against 8–12 — which is to be expected from a fragrance known for its presence in a room. Since the prices are the same, only one question decides: do you want rose with oud, or smoke with resins.
Which has more oud?
Ombre Nomade. Oud is its first accord, backed by birch and amberwood, which gives a smoky, tarry character. In Les Sables Roses oud is second, with rose in front of it, so it comes across more floral.
Which should I choose as my first oud ever?
Neither of these two, if you don't know oud yet — both sit at the top end of intensity. To get acquainted, Montale Arabians Tonka at €1.20 per millilitre makes more sense. If you have to choose between these two, Les Sables Roses is softer.
Why is Ombre Nomade so famous?
Because it made the house's reputation in fragrance circles, and because it's hard to try: Louis Vuitton doesn't sell its fragrances through perfumeries, only in its own boutiques, and there are none in Slovenia, where we're based. Its inaccessibility is part of its prestige.
Are they suitable for the office?
No. According to community ratings Ombre Nomade has very strong sillage and quickly becomes too much indoors; Les Sables Roses, with its animalic accord, is just as risky. Both are evening and winter fragrances.
At the same price, is it even worth comparing decants?
That's exactly why it's worth it. Since the price tells you nothing, the only measure is the scent — and €32 for five millilitres of each is less than a tenth of a bottle bought blind.
