Parfums de Marly Layton vs Layton Exclusif
Exclusif is often understood as a stronger version of Layton, but that's not accurate. The basic idea is indeed the same, but the composition isn't: Exclusif has oud, coffee and amber in the base and civet in the heart, none of which Layton has. It's not the same scent in a denser form but a reworking.

Layton opens with apple, lavender, bergamot and mandarin, has geranium, violet and jasmine in the heart, and vanilla, cardamom, sandalwood and patchouli underneath. It comes across fruity, fresh and widely likeable. Layton Exclusif has almond and grapefruit up top alongside apple, civet, gardenia and cinnamon in the heart, and Laotian oud, coffee, leather and guaiac in the base. Its leading accords include oud and an animalic note, which Layton doesn't have — so it comes across darker and more serious. Price: Layton costs €290 for 125 ml, so €2.32 per millilitre. Layton Exclusif costs €325 for 125 ml, so €2.60 per millilitre — a good 12% more. With decants the difference is €21 against €25 for 5 ml.
Is Exclusif just a stronger Layton?
No. The concentration is indeed higher — parfum against eau de parfum — but the composition has changed too. Oud, coffee, leather and civet are new notes, not strengthened old ones.
Which is better for every day?
Layton. The fruity opening and the absence of oud make it easier for the office and daytime wear. Exclusif is an evening fragrance.
Is it worth paying €35 more?
If you want a darker version, yes. If it's exactly the fruity brightness of Layton you love, Exclusif won't give you more of that, but something else.
Which is better for winter?
Exclusif. Oud, coffee and amber open more slowly in the cold. Layton is usable all year.
Is it worth having both?
Only if you use them separately — Layton by day, Exclusif in the evening. Otherwise they overlap enough in the apple opening that one will stay in the cupboard.
