The longest-lasting fragrances
We don't have longevity or sillage in our catalogue and don't measure them — the values below summarise community ratings on Fragrantica, Parfumo and Basenotes, which is why they're ranges, not numbers. What we can say with certainty is what in a formula makes longevity possible in the first place: heavy base notes. Resins, labdanum, benzoin, oud, vanilla and tonka evaporate slowly; citrus and green notes quickly. Concentration helps, but it's no guarantee — an extrait built on citrus will disappear sooner than an eau de parfum with a resinous base.
- Xerjoff Alexandria II Anniversary: According to the community, 12–16 hours and very strong sillage — the highest ratings in our catalogue. Bulgarian rose with cumin and cardamom, wormwood, sage, civet and oud in the heart, sandalwood with vanilla underneath. A 5 ml decant is €35.
- Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Le Parfum: Ratings vary the most of all — from 10 to 18 hours — which is to be expected for such a widely worn fragrance. Extrait concentration with lavender and vanilla; according to the community, very strong sillage. The cheapest on this list: a 5 ml decant for €9.
- Penhaligon's Halfeti: According to the community, 10–14 hours and strong sillage. Cypress leaf, saffron and cardamom up top, Bulgarian rose with nutmeg in the heart, oud, cedar, leather, sandalwood, amber, tonka and vanilla underneath — a base layer that's hard to wash off.
- Electimuss Imperium: According to the community, 10–16 hours but only moderate to strong sillage — a fragrance that lasts long without pushing into the room. Bergamot and coriander up top, jasmine with lily and tuberose in the heart, vanilla, musk, guaiac, patchouli, amber and oud underneath.
- Lattafa Asad: According to the community, 8–10 hours but very strong sillage — the cheapest way to test how a loud fragrance behaves on your skin. A 2 ml decant costs €3, unusually little for this category.
What actually affects longevity: (1) Base notes. A fragrance with resins, oud and vanilla will last longer than a citrus one, whatever the box says. Check the base before you believe the promise. (2) Skin. Dry skin loses scent faster than oily skin, which can make a difference of several hours with the same fragrance — so someone else's longevity rating isn't a predictor for you. (3) Apply after showering on still-damp skin, and if needed an unscented cream under the fragrance: a moist base holds scent better than a dry one. (4) Clothing. A spray on a scarf or collar lasts much longer than on skin, but it can stain light-coloured and silk fabrics. (5) Separate longevity from loudness. According to the community, Imperium lasts up to 16 hours with moderate sillage, Asad 8–10 hours with very strong sillage — the first is for the office, the second for the evening. "Beast mode" isn't a synonym for long longevity.
Which fragrance in your range lasts the longest?
According to the community, Xerjoff Alexandria II Anniversary (12–16 hours) and Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Le Parfum (10–18 hours). We don't have longevity data in our catalogue and don't measure it, so these summarise other people's ratings, not our own measurement.
Why doesn't my fragrance last long?
Most often because of dry skin or a light fragrance structure. Citrus and green notes evaporate within hours, regardless of concentration. If you're after longevity, look at the base notes — resins, oud, vanilla, tonka — not the EDP or extrait label.
Is an extrait always longer-lasting than an eau de parfum?
No. An extrait has a higher share of fragrance oils, but if it's built on citrus it will fade sooner than an eau de parfum with a resinous base. Concentration affects density and development, not necessarily longevity.
Is a beast-mode fragrance always the better choice?
No. At the office, at lunch or in the car, strong sillage is a drawback, not an advantage. For indoor spaces a fragrance that lasts long and stays close to the skin is better — Electimuss Imperium is one example.
How can I check longevity myself before buying a bottle?
Five millilitres and three days in a row. Apply the same amount, note when you can no longer smell it, and repeat. Other people's ratings tell you what's possible; how long it lasts on you, only your skin knows.
