What is a gourmand fragrance
The gourmand category has a precise birthday: 1992, when Thierry Mugler's Angel came out. Its key ingredient, ethyl maltol, smells of candyfloss and caramel and until then had been considered something with no place in a serious fragrance. Angel proved the opposite and opened up a whole family that today covers everything from chocolate and coffee to cake and rum. The important dividing line is how far a fragrance goes into the edible. Some stay 'gourmand-adjacent' — vanilla and tonka give warmth, but you never smell like dessert. Others go all the way: Toskovat Last Birthday Cake literally has cake, cream and brown sugar among its notes. The former are versatile, the latter polarising. What they share is that practically all of them are winter fragrances — sweetness intensifies in the heat and quickly becomes tiring.
- Montale Intense Café: Coffee and praline — a classic feminine gourmand with an elegant coffee profile. Not in the catalogue — try the alternative
- Fugazzi Vanilla Haze: A modern niche vanilla — almond, hazelnut and coconut milk over caramel. A sophisticated gourmand that isn't cloying.
- Kilian Angel's Share: Bourbon, cognac and vanilla — a gourmand for grown-ups. Not cloying, elegantly edible.
- Lattafa Khamrah: A budget Arabian gourmand — rum and caramel notes in an affordable package. Not in the catalogue — try the alternative
- Nishane Fan Your Flames: A sweet gourmand with rum and pistachio — a unique approach that goes beyond the standard gourmand.
- Sospiro Il Padrino: Amaretto, rum and vanilla with blackcurrant — an Italian, slightly decadent take on the gourmand accord.
- NEH The Element: Vanilla and caramel on an amber base. Sweet without fruit, which is rarer in this category.
- French Avenue Liquid Brun: Cinnamon and spices with vanilla — gourmand in a wintry rather than a pastry-shop direction.
- Pernoire Tierra: Rum and fruit with oud. The gourmand side of oud, if pure oud is too dry for you.
- Elle K Myrrh K: Honey and fruit lead here. An easier way into the category, without heavy base notes.
Are gourmand fragrances suitable for men?
Yes — gourmand fragrances are a unisex trend. Kilian Angel's Share and Lattafa Khamrah are popular with men. Less sweet gourmands (with a woody or tobacco background) read as more masculine.
Do gourmand fragrances attract insects?
Sometimes. Wasps and bees orient themselves by sweet and floral scents, so a gourmand on your skin can attract them in summer, especially outdoors. Mosquitoes are drawn mainly by carbon dioxide and the smell of skin, not perfume. If you spend a lot of time outside, apply fragrance to your clothes rather than exposed skin.
Are gourmand fragrances suitable for summer?
Less so — sweetness intensifies in the heat and becomes too intense. Light gourmands (Erba Pura) work in summer. Intense ones (Kilian, Montale Café) are for autumn and winter.
When did the gourmand category appear?
In 1992, with Thierry Mugler's Angel. Before it, edible scents were considered to have no place in perfumery; ethyl maltol, which smells of candyfloss, was a provocation at the time. Angel became one of the best-selling fragrances of all time, and the whole category followed in its wake.
How do I know how sweet a fragrance will be?
Check whether the edible notes are in the heart or only in the base. Vanilla and tonka in the base give warmth without obvious sweetness. Caramel, chocolate, praline or cake in the heart mean the fragrance will really read as dessert. That's the difference between versatile and polarising.
