The best sweet fragrances for women
"Sweet" is the broadest label in perfumery and therefore the most useless until you break it down. Fruity sweet (pear, lychee, mango) is light and summery. Vanilla sweet is dense and wintry. Caramel and praline sweet is closest to dessert and also turns into too much the fastest. Below are six picks from our range, ordered by how much sweetness they actually bring — with notes and prices from our database, not by feel.
- Xerjoff Erba Pura: The lightest sweetness on the list and the only one that also works in the heat: Sicilian orange, bergamot and lemon over fruity accords, white musk, vanilla and amber underneath. Unisex, with strong sillage according to community ratings. A 5 ml decant is €23.50.
- Parfums de Marly Delina Exclusif: Sweet by the floral route: bergamot, pear and lychee up top, rose with incense in the heart, vanilla, musk, moss and tonka in the base. The incense is what keeps it away from dessert. €305 for 75 ml, so €4.07 per millilitre — a 5 ml decant for €27.
- Fugazzi Vanilla Haze: Creamy vanilla with nuts: almond, hazelnut and coconut milk up top, vanilla pod with tonka in the heart, caramel and cashmere wood underneath. The most "enveloping" pick on the list and good value for money — €14 for five millilitres.
- Essential Parfums Divine Vanille: Vanilla for anyone who finds sweet too much quickly: sage, cinnamon and pepper up top, incense in the heart, vanilla with tonka, benzoin and patchouli underneath. Dry, spicy, no cake at all. At €0.94 per millilitre also the cheapest way into this category.
- Nishane Fan Your Flames X: Sweet with tobacco, for someone who doesn't like classic sweet fragrances: coconut, rum and pistachio up top, tobacco with tonka and thyme in the heart, moss, patchouli and cedar underneath. An extrait, €345 for 100 ml, a 5 ml decant is €20.
- Montale Intense Café: The classic of coffee-vanilla sweetness, which we don't carry. If that's what you're after, the closest is Fugazzi Vanilla Haze — also creamy and nutty, without the coffee bitterness, and €14 for five millilitres. Not in the catalogue — try the alternative
How to choose a sweet fragrance that won't get on your nerves after three days: (1) First work out which kind of sweetness suits you. Fruity is light and summery, vanilla warm and wintry, caramel the densest. People who buy the wrong kind usually conclude the whole category doesn't suit them. (2) Choose fruity in summer and vanilla in winter. Heat amplifies sweetness, so a dense gourmand in July is often too much even for someone who adores it in December. (3) Apply less. With sweet fragrances two sprays is a line that's easy to cross and hard to undo. (4) Check whether the sweetness bothers you on yourself or on others. Those are two different questions: some sweet fragrances stay close to the skin, others fill a room, and according to community ratings Erba Pura is among the louder ones. (5) The price range is wide — from €0.94 per millilitre for Divine Vanille to €4.07 for Delina Exclusif. Since it's the same family, start at the cheaper end; you can always move up.
Which sweet fragrance is suitable for every day?
Xerjoff Erba Pura or Essential Parfums Divine Vanille. The first is fruity-citrus and works in every season, the second dry and spicy, so far from dessert. Both handle daily wear without becoming tiring.
Are sweet fragrances more for winter or summer?
Mostly winter, because cold air tames sweetness. In summer only light fruity versions work — Erba Pura is one example. Dense gourmands like Fugazzi Vanilla Haze quickly become too heavy in the heat.
What's the difference between a gourmand and a vanilla fragrance?
Gourmand covers all edible scents: coffee, chocolate, caramel, pastry. A vanilla fragrance is one branch of that family. So every vanilla fragrance is a gourmand, but not the other way round — Nishane Fan Your Flames X, for instance, is a gourmand with tobacco, not a vanilla fragrance.
Are sweet fragrances only for women?
No, even though that's how they're marketed. In our database Erba Pura and Fan Your Flames X are listed as unisex, and so is Divine Vanille. The label on the box tells you nothing about who a fragrance will suit — only skin shows that.
How many decants should I order to find out what suits me?
Three 2 ml decants from different branches: one fruity, one vanilla and one caramel. That costs less than €30 and over ten days of wear tells you more than any description, this one included.
