BDK Parfums Gris Charnel EDP vs Extrait
Gris Charnel is the fragrance that moved BDK Parfums from the niche fringe into the names everyone knows. According to perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui, the Extrait is a 30 percent concentrate of the same idea — and that's exactly what makes it interesting: a reworking of a fragrance that wasn't missing anything.

The top stays the same — cardamom, fig and black tea. The difference happens underneath: the Extrait adds patchouli, vanilla and cedar to the base, which the EDP doesn't have. So the EDP is drier and greyer, the Extrait warmer and creamier, with a more rounded finish. If you love exactly that dry, almost ascetic greyness of the original, you'll hear a sweetness in the Extrait you weren't looking for. If the EDP always went missing on your skin after three hours, the Extrait is your fix. The price difference for a decant is €10 for 5 ml — small enough to settle the question on your skin rather than in your head.
Is the Extrait just a denser EDP?
No. The concentration is indeed higher, but the composition has changed too — the base has patchouli, vanilla and cedar, which the EDP doesn't. It's a reworking, not just a stronger mix.
Which is better for the office?
The EDP. It's dry, greyish and stays closer to the body. The Extrait, with patchouli and vanilla in the base, leaves a more noticeable trail, which can be too much in an enclosed space with lots of people.
Can Gris Charnel be worn all year?
The EDP, yes — fig and tea keep it light enough even in spring. With its warm base, the Extrait is more of an autumn and winter fragrance.
Which should I try first if I don't know either?
The EDP. It's cheaper and it's the original — if it doesn't suit you, the Extrait probably won't either, because it's the same basic idea. If it does suit you and runs out of steam, the sequel is waiting.
