BDK Parfums Gris Charnel vs Memo Paris African Leather
Both fragrances come from Parisian niche houses and both open with cardamom, which is the only real similarity between them. Gris Charnel is often classed as a leather fragrance, but there's no leather among its accords at all — wood, spices and powder lead. African Leather does have leather, right after the spices.

Gris Charnel stands on fig, black tea and iris, with sandalwood and tonka underneath. The result is soft, dry and powdery, without sharpness — a fragrance that stays close to the body. African Leather goes the opposite way: cinnamon, patchouli and rose in the heart, leather, oud and amber in the base, and an animalic note among its accords. It's rawer and more noticeable. They're not in the same price class either — a 5 ml decant is €15 against €22, and 10 ml €30 against €42, so African Leather is about a third more expensive. If you're looking for your first serious niche fragrance for every day, Gris Charnel is the safer choice; if you're looking for leather, Gris Charnel isn't the answer, because it simply doesn't have any.
Is Gris Charnel a leather fragrance?
Not according to our database. Its accords are wood, spices, aromatic, powder and fruit — leather isn't among them. The skin-like impression some people write about comes from sandalwood and tonka, not from a leather note.
Which is easier for every day?
Gris Charnel. It's dry and stays close to the body, so it works at the office too. African Leather, with leather and an animalic note, leaves a more noticeable trail.
Is African Leather really African?
The name is an interpretation, not a description. Memo Paris links it to the savannah and dry heat; its notes include cardamom, pink pepper, cinnamon, leather and oud — ingredients not tied to one continent.
Which should I take as an introduction to leather fragrances?
African Leather, because it's the only one of the two that has leather at all. If it seems too raw, it's better to try a softer leather, such as a vanilla one, than Gris Charnel, which will take you into a different category.
Do they overlap enough that one will do?
No. They share only cardamom up top. After fifteen minutes they're two different fragrances, and in a collection they won't compete.
