Kilian Angel's Share vs Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
Two fragrances that often turn up in the same sentence, even though they tell different stories. Angel's Share Paradis is cognac: raspberry, cognac and liqueur up top, tonka, Bulgarian rose and caramel in the heart, praline, beechwood and vanilla underneath. Tobacco Vanille is tobacco: dry leaf, spices and vanilla. What they share is that both are warm, expensive and wintry. The difference is what carries them — boozy sweetness in the Kilian, dry tobacco leaf in the Tom Ford.

Angel's Share is sweeter and more immediate — if you like it, you'll know in the first minute. Tobacco Vanille is drier and needs more time to open up, but you also tire of it less quickly. Both are a serious outlay, and here's the important number: 5 ml of Angel's Share Paradis costs €41.99, more than a full bottle of many a decent fragrance. This is exactly the price league where a blind buy is the most expensive mistake you can make — and where a decant makes the most sense.
Which is better for women?
Both are officially unisex, but with caramel, raspberry and praline Angel's Share is more often received as feminine. Tobacco Vanille has dry tobacco leaf, which in the Western reading counts as more masculine. That's a convention, not a rule — wear the one you like the smell of.
Is either suitable for everyday wear?
Not really. Both are dense, sweet and long-lasting, which quickly becomes too much at the office or on public transport. These are fragrances for winter evenings and occasions where it's right to be noticed.
Which do you recommend as an introduction to the tobacco-vanilla category?
Angel's Share, because it's more direct and you get it straight away. Tobacco Vanille is dry and needs some patience before you come to like it — at this price, a risky combination for a first try.
Is it really worth it at this price?
It depends how much you'll wear them. At €41.99 for 5 ml of Angel's Share, you're paying about as much as for a full bottle of a good mainstream fragrance. If you'll wear the fragrance ten times a year on special occasions, a decant is a smarter decision than a bottle that will sit in a cupboard.
