Parfums de Marly — a buyer's guide
Parfums de Marly was founded in 2009 by Julien Sprecher, who took his inspiration from the court of Louis XV and the Château de Marly. The historical story is nice, but buyers care about something else: the house sells 125 ml bottles, so the shelf price looks worse than it really is. Layton costs €290, which is €2.32 per millilitre — less than many a small bottle that looks half the price. We carry three, two of which are versions of the same scent, so you're really choosing between two directions.
- Parfums de Marly Layton: The house's best-known fragrance and the cheapest per millilitre — €2.32. Apple, lavender, bergamot and mandarin up top, geranium with violet and jasmine in the heart, vanilla, cardamom, sandalwood and guaiac underneath. Sweet and spicy, with no sharp edges. A 2 ml decant costs €12.
- Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif: The name is misleading: this isn't a louder Layton. The pyramid adds Laotian oud, coffee, leather and civet, with almond up top — the result is a darker, animalic fragrance that shares mainly its name with the original. At €325 for 125 ml it's €2.60 per millilitre.
- Parfums de Marly Delina Exclusif: Rose with incense, more serious and less sweet than the regular Delina. Bergamot, pear and lychee up top, vanilla, musk, moss and tonka in the base. The bottle is 75 ml, not 125, so at €305 and €4.07 per millilitre it's by far the most expensive in the house.
How to read the Parfums de Marly range: (1) Don't compare the bottle price with other houses until you've checked the volume. The men's line comes in 125 ml bottles, which puts Layton at €2.32 per millilitre — cheap by niche standards. (2) Delina Exclusif is the exception in volume and therefore in price: 75 ml for €305 means €4.07 per millilitre, almost twice as much as Layton. If you're going to buy a single thing blind from this house, don't let it be this one. (3) Layton and Layton Exclusif aren't the same scent at two strengths. There's no oud, coffee, leather or civet in the original — if Layton suits you, that tells you nothing about Exclusif. Five millilitres of both cost €46, under a tenth of one bottle. (4) Since two of the three are versions of the same scent, the real choice is simple: sweet-spicy Layton or rose with incense in Delina Exclusif. Only then decide on the Exclusif version.
Which Parfums de Marly is best for a beginner?
Layton. It's the most versatile of the three, the cheapest per millilitre and the easiest to wear — sweet and spicy, with lavender and vanilla, no sharp edges. A 2 ml decant costs €12, less than a pizza, to answer a question that otherwise costs €290.
What's the difference between Layton and Layton Exclusif?
It's not about concentration but a different formula. Exclusif adds Laotian oud, coffee, leather, civet and almond, none of which are in Layton, so it's darker and more animalic. The original is sweet-spicy and sociable, Exclusif more demanding and more of an evening scent.
How long does Layton last?
According to the community between 8 and 12 hours, longer on clothes. It projects strongly for the first two to three hours, then settles into a closer aura. We don't have longevity data in our database and haven't measured it — this is a summary of reviews from Fragrantica, Parfumo and Basenotes, where ratings vary considerably.
Is Layton suitable for women?
In our database it's listed as masculine and Delina Exclusif as feminine, but the label is a starting point, not a rule. Layton is built on vanilla, apple and lavender, which isn't a distinctly masculine combination, and in practice everyone wears it. If the label bothers you, check it with a decant, not by reading.
Why are Parfums de Marly bottles so expensive?
Because they're big. The men's line comes in 125 ml, above average for a niche house — so the shelf price is high but the price per millilitre is lower than many a smaller bottle. Delina Exclusif at 75 ml is the only exception, and the only one where a decant is really essential.
